Long before there were pharmaceutical companies, people were finding cures for disease. While there have been some innovations in medicine, most have to do with techniques and not medicines. (For example, penicillin is a mould.) Patent medicines are, for the most part, derived from natural substances, modified such that a company can take out a patent and, therefore, profit from the sale.

A bookstore search for Rainforest Remedies will lead you to lots of books on natural medicines. Some of those books show you want patent medicines have been derived from ancient knowledge.

While there is a lot to say about natural medicine, a good starting point would be to add bookmarks to on-line resources and books.
