A $25 EV Pickup in the US?

Surely you have heard about the Slate EV pickup by now. But, have you thought about it? That is, if it succeeds is it something you might want?

There are lots of articles and videos about it. I have watched a few and all seem to be lacking in their own way but this one feels like a good starting point. That is, it tells you want Slate plans to do complete with the various options. If you don’t know Slate’s plans, watch this video. It will get you ready for my questions.

If I lived in the US (I don’t) and this vehicle was available today at the projected price I would probably buy it. But, I am not your normal guy. I have a 5-passenger VW Saviero pickup. I have had it for a couple of years — maybe three now — and have driven it about 2000 kilometers. 99% of my travel is walking of by bus. So, other than only room for two people vs. five, the Slate would do what I need, I think. But even at $25k vs. the about $8k I paid for my used pickup, it wouldn’t be worth it. And gasoline for 2000 kilometers doesn’t make up the difference.

Now, I see quite a few things that need to be thought about.

  • Will it actually happen? They are saying delivery in 2026 or 2027. By then it seems there could be some serious alternatives.
  • What about service? They are saying affiliates and, yes, EVs need little service, but …
  • I am guessing most people will not be happy with the range of the basic version. What will the one with the bigger battery cost?
  • If you don’t want grey, what will the wrap cost?
  • How will it be sold? State governments are still making companies without dealer networks jump through hoops.

It’s an interesting idea and it isn’t competition for anything being made in the US today but the bottom line is whether there a market for it.
