BYD had previously denied that it intended to enter the US car market but it looks like things have changed. They are now saying they are going to build a plant in Mexico that will have 10,000 employees. Sure, many of those cars will head to Latin America but it also sounds like the US will be a target.
Why the change? My guess is that with Tesla prioritizing the RoboTaxi over the new small consumer car, BYD sees they have an opportunity. Personally, I think they are right. I don’t think Tesla has made a mistake — they have more to gain with the RoboTaxi market and their self-driving capabilities put they ahead of everyone else.
