Hopper

My “How About a Micro-EV Kit” article I just posted inspired me to do a lot of looking around. There is a lot of stuff out there but one vehicle stood out, The Hopper.

In my research a 3-wheel vehicle makes the most sense but, for stability, two front wheels and one rear one seems to be the way to go. But, construction is harder than one front, two rear. If you have two front wheels which steer the vehicle you have to deal with the caster, camber, toe-in and such of the two wheels. While not impossible, the problem is knowing what you want. Adjustments can easily mean new parts or, at a minimum, welding changes.

Then, I found the hopper. This video will quickly show you how it is different. It has two fixed front wheels and a single rear wheel that both steers and powers the vehicle. As far as I can tell, it is unique. The only real issues I have with it are:

  • Availability — not in production yet
  • Location — initially will only be available in Germany
  • Price — €13,000 which would translate to over $20,000 here with delivery and customs duties

But, that said, it is very cool as you will see in the video.
