While doing my research on electric vehicle parts I ran into four videos about electric TukTuks. Three were about 2025 models (including one from Vespa) and one now available in Kenya. I picked the video about the Kenyan one because it is not just a sales pitch plus it has a price.
It looks like a typical TukTuk with the driver seat and a back seat. Range is 45 km with the standard battery or 100 km with the bigger one. Shorter than a gas TukTuk but still a realistic range. The video goes on to show you what it is made of/how it works and the other electric products they are selling.
The price is 500,000 KES which translates to a bit under US$4000. For comparison, a gas TukTuk sells for about US$5700 in Guatemala.
I know that there are electric trucks which are basically a TukTuk with a box on the back in China. Clearly, if you can make the passenger version, the truck is a no brainer.
While the stability of a 3-wheel vehicle with one front wheel is not as good as with one rear wheel, placing the batteries low in the vehicle should make it more stable than the gasoline version. I think it is time for me to start talking to the local TukTuk dealers.
