VW has said they plan to introduce a VW ID.2 GTI. Probably not really fast but the price is right — between $20,000 and $25,000. It should qualify for the $7,500 EV tax credit making it very affordable.
The ID.2 is a small car but I don’t think that is an issue. In fact, to me it sounds exactly like what is needed in the EV market in the US. There are lots of people in the US who are hesitant to buy an EV to replace their ICE family car (so far) but something small and inexpensive would likely increase EV penetration and show more people that EVs actually make sense.
There are no specifications yet but the Electric Viking has a bit more to say about this. It’s introduction in the US market might inspire Tesla to market their upcoming compact in the US and, maybe even inspire BYD to introduce the Dolphin and Seagull into the US market.
