I just saw a post about this on the Engineering for Change mailing list. It’s not new but it is about the only “alternative toilet” that, to me, makes sense.
First, it isn’t a toilet, it is a toilet waste processing system. It will work with your existing toilet. Second, it uses no energy. And, finally, it requires (almost) no maintenance.
Do I have your attention yet? The toilet user will see no change — the biggest issue with alternative toilet systems. Things like “just add some sawdust” or “turn the crank” turn people off. So does the smell — even if it isn’t a bad smell — of composting toilets.
You can check out the information at https://www.aquatron.se/
The site includes a video of how it works. And, yes, they have a whole assortment of systems from single family to school-sized choices.
