While I have read a lot of positive comments about the Tesla Cybertruck there has also been some negative feedback. Part of that comes from what some consider the “ripoff price” of it.
While it is very true that the prices have come in higher than the initial guestimates from four years ago, I think it is completely reasonable. As the only other big electric pickup out there is a Ford F150, let’s do a bit of comparison. In particular, let’s compare the top of the line of each one.
- Starting price: $109,990
- 700 HP
- 0-60mph: 3.6s
- Ground clearance: 13.1″
- Steer by wire: No (Among other advantages, this gives you variable ratio steering)
- Length: 232.6″
- Max. payload: 1,400 lbs
- Max. towing capacity: 8,700 lbs
Cyberbeast:
- Starting price: $99,990
- 845 HP
- 0-60mph: 2.6s
- Ground clearance: 17.44″
- Steer by wire: Yes
- Length: 223.7″
- Max. payload: ~2,300 lbs
- Max. towing capacity: 11,000 lbs
There are other tradeoffs (for example, the F-150 has a bigger frunk but the Cybertruck has a bigger bed) but we don’t hear people complaining about the Ford. While we all “wish” the Cybertruck was cheaper the price is not out of line for what you get. And, as Elon said, “if you get in a fight with another vehicle, you will win”.
