Don’t call your travel agent yet but a Dutch company has said commercial electric passenger airplanes are now practical. They even say that current battery technology is sufficient.
The “proposed” airplane will have a range of 1000 km with current battery technology, enough to cover half of current scheduled commercial flights. That could totally revolutionize air travel.
Now, the issues:
- Someone is going to need to come up with billions of dollars of investment capital to make this happen.
- Airport infrastructure will need to change to offer charging capabilities for plains like this.
I think it will happen. I think they are being realistic when they say it will be flying in 2033. Maybe Elon Musk is interested in getting involved.
