The Ionic 2 is only offered as an example of what is happening. Hyundai is moving to a new platform and the Ionic 2 will be the first car built on it. It will cost about $22,000. This is the beginning of serious disruption.
There are already lots of EVs available in China in the $4000 to $7,000 price range. I doubt any of them will make it to the west but we are finally starting to see lower-priced EVs entering the market. No, not from Ford or GM but even VW has some on the way.
