Some time ago there were articles about how Tesla’s carbon fiber wrapped rotor created a better motor for EVs. The claim was that it was more efficient and tests such as the performance of the Model S Plaid seems to have supported that. But, I never understood what carbon fiber could have to do with performance.
Well, this video explains the tech and why it matters. While I think the information is accurate my one nit is when they keep saying “I to R” losses. What they really want to say is “I squared times R” losses. In other words losses equal to the square of the current times the resistance.
While we are defining things, you probably want to know that IPMsynRM stands for “Internal permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor“.
